If my husband, a Ghanaian, who spent his entire life in Ghana presented these images on his website, would he be accused of perpetuating stereotypes? Stereotype, of course, is a subjective idea. The stereotypes that come to mind in relation to Africa would be starving children, flies feasting on famished open mouths, groups of boys in pickups with guns... I have to say that I've not heard of rubbish on the beach being considered as an African or Ghanaian stereotype. Is it that non-Ghanaians must conform to some kind of unwritten rule about what they should or shouldn't portray in relation to what they experience in Ghana, even just for a few hours? There is no judgment in the writing. The images of Independence Square appear more striking than the average tourist's snaps. If my husband arrived in my home town of Sydney and chose to photograph syringes in the sand as well as the beautiful view from the beaches should he be accused of stereotyping Sydney or Australians? Why shouldn't he portray what he experiences? Why should anyone not photograph what is? What if the writer chose to blog images of pieces of cloth or Ashanti stools. Arguably also stereotypes. Is it ok if it's a positive stereotype?

And how are these the opposite of that stereotype? Litter on the beach, and Independence Square but no photos of AfriCommand Headquarters at the "No Photos Allowed" American Embassy? Hmm...

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment. I understand what you mean - and I do wish I'd had more time to explore! (14 hours in Ghana actually translated into about only 8 hours in Accra.)

I think for people who have never been to Ghana or even Africa, these images show the opposite of the stereotypical African images in many peoples' minds, which are pictures of poor, hungry people living in huts in the desert.

Laura
